Diebold introduced its first IDM in 1991. The fifth generation of Diebold’s intelligent depository employs advanced technology to deliver lower total cost of ownership for the financial institution, greater ease of use for the consumer and enhanced security and fraud detection. The new IDM also offers advancements in both security and operation.

Danny O’Brien, Diebold’s senior vice president of global product marketing, management and engineering, said the new module raises the bar for deposit automation technology.

“Diebold’s fifth-generation IDM represents a new standard in ATM check-imaging technology,” O’Brien said. “We’re always working to improve functionality for our customers and simplify use for their customers. That’s exactly what the new module will do.”

Among the fifth generation’s most important advancements are those that enhance security. The module includes a patent-pending, double-detect capability, which prevents the insertion of multiple checks; and patent-pending, enhanced magnetic ink detection, which reduces the risk of accepting photocopied checks by sensing and reporting suspicious magnetism. The IDM also includes the exclusive self-service application of Carreker Corp.’s Quality Assurance Suite, Image Inspector, which improves the accuracy of fraud-detection systems and enhances and verifies the quality of check images.

Diebold’s IDM can stack and store up to 1,000 checks — more than twice the number previous models could. And the module makes accepts crumpled, curled or creased checks.

“Our goal is to develop products that can help improve the businesses of our customers around the globe,” O’Brien said. “As our customers’ needs continue to evolve, we’re constantly improving our technologies to provide the innovative features and functionalities our customers have come to expect from Diebold.”

IDM can be easily incorporated into Opteva advanced-function ATMs without functionality losses or excessive terminal changes. Appropriate for the global financial services marketplace, it includes a magnetic-read head that can recognize the CMC-7 magnetic ink character recognition format used in international markets. The module will be available in the United States and in markets around the world beginning in second quarter 2005.

DAYTON, Ohio – NCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) is helping financial industry customers take another step toward check truncation by announcing the integration of the legacy 3890 reader/sorter into its ImageMark Transaction Manager system.  Using today’s technology, financial institutions can leverage the efficiency created by the Check Clearing for the 21^st Century Act.

Traditionally, bank personnel within the proof department encode the amount of every deposited check using magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), the mainstay in the banking industry for encoding and processing.  ImageMark Transaction Manager can now accept data and images captured from 3890s.  This provides an opportunity to eliminate amount encoding, which translates to processing cost savings for banks.

ImageMark Transaction Manager is the banking industry’s most widely installed image proof-of-deposit (POD) application.  Users of Transaction Manager can eliminate amount encoding and reduce overall proof labor by more than 35 percent.  The images and data can then be posted and cleared through image exchange networks simultaneously, resulting in fewer adjustments and exceptions to be handled the following day.

Large capital investments made in legacy 3890 reader/sorters and related software applications have been a barrier to more widespread adoption of image POD for many banks.  Economies of scale with traditional check volumes had previously positioned these sorters well in the marketplace.  With check volumes now declining and image exchange looming, banks are re-examining check encoding and capture processes in order to optimize efficiency.

“Check truncation and image exchange are making paper-based processing a thing of the past, much like e-mail has done to overnight mail delivery service,” said Joe Kniceley, NCR’s vice president of Payment and Imaging solutions, Americas region.  “The transition from systems that handle paper to those that handle electronic workflows will occur over many years, but it is important that banks plan well and not duplicate processing infrastructure and the associated costs.  By integrating image-enabled 3890 sorters into ImageMark Transaction Manager, banks can protect investments in their legacy technology and position themselves for check truncation.”

To reinforce NCR’s belief that MICR encoding will continue to decline in usage, the company has discontinued the manufacture of its 7766 single-pocket proof encoder, the leading product in its class since its release in 1989.  NCR will continue to provide maintenance for the 7766.

As previously announced, Avalon Framework, LogKit, and Cornerstone have been moved to Apache Excalibur (http://excalibur.apache.org) along with the original ECM and Fortress code. The Excalibur team includes many experienced Avalon developers and support questions should be directed there.

Forks of Phoenix and Merlin have started at Codehaus Loom and DPML Metro respectively. Users of those software packages are encouraged to investigate these projects.
