Diebold Introduces Next-Generation IDM

September 8th, 2005

NORTH CANTON, Ohio — Diebold Inc. (NYSE: DBD) is expanding its deposit-automation family with its intelligent depository module. The IDM was recently showcased at TransPay in Orlando.

Diebold introduced its first IDM in 1991. The fifth generation of Diebold’s intelligent depository employs advanced technology to deliver lower total cost of ownership for the financial institution, greater ease of use for the consumer and enhanced security and fraud detection. The new IDM also offers advancements in both security and operation.

Danny O’Brien, Diebold’s senior vice president of global product marketing, management and engineering, said the new module raises the bar for deposit automation technology.

“Diebold’s fifth-generation IDM represents a new standard in ATM check-imaging technology,” O’Brien said. “We’re always working to improve functionality for our customers and simplify use for their customers. That’s exactly what the new module will do.”

Among the fifth generation’s most important advancements are those that enhance security. The module includes a patent-pending, double-detect capability, which prevents the insertion of multiple checks; and patent-pending, enhanced magnetic ink detection, which reduces the risk of accepting photocopied checks by sensing and reporting suspicious magnetism. The IDM also includes the exclusive self-service application of Carreker Corp.’s Quality Assurance Suite, Image Inspector, which improves the accuracy of fraud-detection systems and enhances and verifies the quality of check images.

Diebold’s IDM can stack and store up to 1,000 checks — more than twice the number previous models could. And the module makes accepts crumpled, curled or creased checks.

“Our goal is to develop products that can help improve the businesses of our customers around the globe,” O’Brien said. “As our customers’ needs continue to evolve, we’re constantly improving our technologies to provide the innovative features and functionalities our customers have come to expect from Diebold.”

IDM can be easily incorporated into Opteva advanced-function ATMs without functionality losses or excessive terminal changes. Appropriate for the global financial services marketplace, it includes a magnetic-read head that can recognize the CMC-7 magnetic ink character recognition format used in international markets. The module will be available in the United States and in markets around the world beginning in second quarter 2005.

NCR Helping U.S. Banks Eliminate MICR Amount Encoding by Focusing on Check Truncation

September 8th, 2005

ImageMark Transaction Manager integrates reader/sorter processing with today’s
image-based proof solutions

DAYTON, OhioNCR Corporation (NYSE: NCR) is helping financial industry customers take another step toward check truncation by announcing the integration of the legacy 3890 reader/sorter into its ImageMark Transaction Manager system.  Using today’s technology, financial institutions can leverage the efficiency created by the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act.

Traditionally, bank personnel within the proof department encode the amount of every deposited check using magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), the mainstay in the banking industry for encoding and processing.  ImageMark Transaction Manager can now accept data and images captured from 3890s.  This provides an opportunity to eliminate amount encoding, which translates to processing cost savings for banks.

ImageMark Transaction Manager is the banking industry’s most widely installed image proof-of-deposit (POD) application.  Users of Transaction Manager can eliminate amount encoding and reduce overall proof labor by more than 35 percent.  The images and data can then be posted and cleared through image exchange networks simultaneously, resulting in fewer adjustments and exceptions to be handled the following day.

Large capital investments made in legacy 3890 reader/sorters and related software applications have been a barrier to more widespread adoption of image POD for many banks.  Economies of scale with traditional check volumes had previously positioned these sorters well in the marketplace.  With check volumes now declining and image exchange looming, banks are re-examining check encoding and capture processes in order to optimize efficiency.

“Check truncation and image exchange are making paper-based processing a thing of the past, much like e-mail has done to overnight mail delivery service,” said Joe Kniceley, NCR’s vice president of Payment and Imaging solutions, Americas region.  “The transition from systems that handle paper to those that handle electronic workflows will occur over many years, but it is important that banks plan well and not duplicate processing infrastructure and the associated costs.  By integrating image-enabled 3890 sorters into ImageMark Transaction Manager, banks can protect investments in their legacy technology and position themselves for check truncation.”

To reinforce NCR’s belief that MICR encoding will continue to decline in usage, the company has discontinued the manufacture of its 7766 single-pocket proof encoder, the leading product in its class since its release in 1989.  NCR will continue to provide maintenance for the 7766.

Conference Alert: Dick Zedeker, assistant vice president, NCR Payment Solutions, will present NCR’s “Proof Elimination” solution at the BAI TransPay Conference, Wednesday, May 4 at 11:45 a.m., in Orlando, Fla.  Joining him will be Danny App, vice president, Fifth Third Bank, to share his bank’s perspective on this solution offering.  Visit NCR booth #202 for more information.

Collaboration Enables Streamlined Payment-Related Processing

September 8th, 2005

Wausau Financial Systems Links Software To Kodak’s Workgroup Scanners

ROCHESTER, N.Y., May 3, 2005 - In an effort to help businesses, government agencies, and enterprises streamline their payment-related processes, financial solutions provider Wausau Financial Systems (WFS) is integrating its industry-leading software portfolio with Eastman Kodak Company’s innovative document scanning technologies.

This collaborative effort makes WFS’ software portfolio compatible with Kodak’s family of low-volume, workgroup, and departmental scanners - from the KODAK i30 Scanner through the KODAK i200 Series Scanners.  As a result, companies and organizations will be able to capture payment-related documents with scanners utilizing Kodak’s legendary SurePath paper handling and Perfect Page image processing, and then “hand off” those digital images to WFS’ software portfolio.

Businesses, government agencies, and enterprises are increasingly utilizing document scanning technologies and innovative software solutions in distributed environments to help them gain efficiencies in their document-intensive workflows.  This is evidenced by demand for distributed point of presentment capture systems that have been bolstered by the recently enacted Check Clearing For The 21st Century Act.  This legislation enables corporations, government agencies, and financial institutions to automate payment processing through the use of imaging technologies.

This is an excellent example of infoimaging in action.  Infoimaging is a worldwide revolution created by the convergence of image science and information technology and is made up of three key markets - devices, infrastructure, and services/media.

“Check 21 has helped create an explosion of interest among companies to digitize their paper-based payment processes, with companies realizing that efficiencies gained through the digitization of checks can also be applied to the digitization of other payment-related documents,” said Bill Gates, general manager and vice president of sales for Kodak’s U.S. and Canada Region.  “Partnering with WFS allows Kodak products, services, and technologies to further benefit customers in the payment-processing market.”

“Wausau Financial Systems is responding directly to the industry’s desire to gain efficiencies and benefits from the digitization of paper-based payment processes,” said Doug Deardorf, vice president, worldwide channel sales, WFS.  “Kodak’s rich tradition of producing high quality scanned images through its family of products will enable us to deliver enhanced solutions that exceed customer expectations.”

WFS is a leading provider of payment-processing solutions worldwide, including image-based check and remittance processing, point of presentment solutions, enterprise content management, ATMs, and fraud and security solutions.

This relationship makes WFS a member of Kodak’s Independent Software Vendor (ISV) program, which allows software vendors to provide support and solutions for Kodak’s document scanners and other products.  This venture will create a joint presence between WFS and Kodak at trade shows, seminars, and in other industry-related outreach.

Carreker and Micrographic Sciences Help Banks Streamline the Research and Data Retrieval Process

September 8th, 2005

ORLANDO, FLORIDA, BAI TransPay Conference (May 03, 2005) — Carreker Corporation (Nasdaq: CANI), a leading provider of technology and consulting solutions for the financial industry, announced today the formation of an alliance with leading document management provider Micrographic Sciences, Inc. (MSI) to integrate MSI’s Advanced Network Foldering (ANF) solution with Carreker’s common, enterprisewide, Express Research™ solution.

Under the agreement Carreker will recommend the integrated solution to institutions that require a more efficient request, retrieval, and distribution process as well as to existing users of its research and adjustments software (called Innovasion™) when these clients upgrade to Express Research™.

Carreker’s Express Research™ is a web-based solution that provides centralized, self-service management of exception and customer service requests. By integrating image archive, data repositories, all items data and microfilm technology, it dramatically streamlines the research process as it improves efficiency, reduces expenses and enhances customer service. Express Research enables research requests to flow automatically through the enterprise, from point of entry to delivery, using system rules and maintainable, customizable parameters.

MSI’s Advanced Network Foldering is an automated microfilm, document, and digital image retrieval, foldering, and distribution solution that allows the client to maintain their existing data archives while transitioning to Express Research™. It offers support for state-of-the-art retrieval devices, legacy retrieval devices, and cutting edge digital archive retrieval and adds increased functionality and better image quality to existing systems.

Paul F. Puttman, president, Micrographic Sciences said, “As financial institutions increasingly migrate to a more efficient, automated research process, it will be critical for them to leverage their existing infrastructure, including historical archives and user interfaces. Advanced Network Foldering will allow them to bridge the gap between legacy equipment and newer systems to enable faster, easier and more cost-effective data retrieval.”

“Researching and responding to customer requests can be costly and labor intensive. This process can be further complicated in a blended payments environment, where item data is stored in multiple systems, and requests are received from multiple departmental applications,” said John Carreker, president, Global Payments Technology, Carreker. “As banks look to improve the research process while reducing costs, having a common platform like Express Research and Advanced Network Foldering will serve this purpose and dramatically improve customer service.”

J.D. (Denny) Carreker said, “As the banking industry continues its shift from paper to imaging to achieve operational efficiencies, our clients are faced with additional research challenges. We continue to devise solutions and alliances that will enable banks to leverage the transition to their operational and customer advantage.”
